Volunteering FAQ

How old do I have to be to volunteer for BCLM?

All aged 18 and over are welcome to apply. People aged 16–18 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian during their volunteering and not left alone at any time.

How much time do I have to commit to volunteering?

Here at BCLM, we understand that it is your free time you are offering so we try to be as flexible as we can. Our volunteers usually choose a regular day each week, but we understand that circumstances may change so even if you can only spare one day a month we would still appreciate your support.

For our Visitor Engagement roles (a costumed demonstrator role, chatting to visitors in an historic building on site) we ask if you can be around during our ‘peak’ hours in the day, usually 11am – 3pm, to help enhance the visitor experience during our busiest times.

Other roles may require different levels of commitment (either due to capacity or project aims), but if this is the case then it is usually discussed with the individual at the informal interview stage.

Where/how can I offer my skills to BCLM?

We have many volunteer opportunities that vary in skill level and interest. View our current opportunities and find out how you can support us.

How do I apply to become a volunteer with BCLM?

You must complete a volunteer application form and send it to us at All applications will be considered. If we can identify an appropriate role for you within our current opportunities, then your details will be passed on to the relevant Team Manager for review. View our current opportunities or download a volunteer application form.

When can I expect to hear from you?

We are very fortunate to have a very busy and successful volunteer programme, but unfortunately this can mean that it takes time for our team to carefully review each volunteer application and determine the most suitable opportunity for you. We aim to get back to everyone within two weeks of their initial enquiry.

Can I undertake my work experience with you?

Our work experience programme is dealt with by our Human Resources department. All requests should be forwarded to them. Find out more about our work experience opportunities.

I still have questions, what do I do now?

If none of the above has answered your query, please get in touch. Contact a member of the team by calling 0121 557 9643 or emailing us at
