Friends of President, steam narrowboat

Friends of President support the Museum by looking after and operating President – one of the world’s only restored coal fired steam powered narrow boats - and its unpowered butty boat Kildare.

Friends of President

Who is President?

President is a steam powered narrowboat, built in 1909.  Her first career was as a ‘fly’ boat (working day and night) on runs from Birmingham to London.  Her precious cargo included tea, spices, beer and bicycles.  On conversion to motor power in 1925, she joined the Fellows, Morton and Clayton fleet and was soon towing a butty to Birmingham on the newly formed Grand Union Canal.  Ending her working days with British Waterways, she was eventually bought by Black Country Living Museum in 1983.

A friendly bunch

Friends of President was formed to look after the narrowboat in her ‘retirement’.  Under the group’s care, she’s been restored to her former glory.  The group maintain and operate this historic vessel, taking President out around the country from April – July.  These trips include rallies and waterways festivals, where President is showcased and the Museum promoted.

The group are looking for new members.  This friendly bunch want to share their heritage skills, ensuring this historic boat stays afloat.  They would welcome new crew!
