Spring Cleaning in January!

16 January 2014

The Museum has just reopened for the New Year although we are still on winter opening hours, so are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Closing the Museum during our quietest month provides the perfect opportunity for the Collections Team, Maintenance Team, Museum Demonstrators and Volunteers to carry out essential preservation work in the village.

I/media/news/library/140116_230_phil_cleaning.jpgn December, the Curator of Domestic Life spent the day deep cleaning the workshop behind Gripton’s Radio Shop with the support of two hard working volunteers. This involved taking everything down from the shelves, sweeping the floor, cleaning the windows, dusting away cobwebs and much more. The picture (left) shows radio shop volunteer, Phil Harris cleaning objects in the workshop. Deep cleaning has also taken place in Gregory’s Genereal Store, Doo’s Pharmacy and our Hardware Shop.

The window displays are particularly difficult to access when the Museum is open, so they are made a priority during the deep clean, the objects on display are removed and carefully cleaned, the lining paper refreshed and the window redisplayed. At the same time, we check for pests that could cause damage to buildings an/media/news/library/140116_230_l-r_frederica_kelly_helen_taylor_linda_johnson_009.jpgd collections, especially looking for signs of woodworm and moths. In the picture (right) volunteers; Frederica Kelly and Linda Johnson alongside the Assistant Curator are cleaning Gregory's General Store. In the case of Gregory’s, display stock such as perishable currents, cinnamon, groats and gray paes are to be replaced.

The Collections Team have also worked alongside Museum Demonstrators to clean domestic buildings like Station Road Cottages, Back to Backs and the Bakery and the Industry Team have  worked hard to spruce up areas like the Brass Foundry, Tram Depot and cabins on boats Stour and Diamond. The deep clean will continue throughout the days when the Museum is closed to public, however we would like to thank all staff and volunteers for their ongoing hard work during this time.
