Discover the power of steam this Bank Holiday

Newcomen in Steam

22 August 2016

Enjoy a fun-packed, steam-powered, full day out at BCLM this Bank Holiday Weekend (27 – 29 Aug)!

There’s plenty to get stuck into – see us fire up the mighty Newcomen Steam Engine - a full scale replica of the first working steam steam engine in history - made in the heart of the Black Country. Then, head on over to the Museum’s canal and you’ll see turn-of-the-century steam-powered narrow boat President in action. You’ll discover the fascinating history behind the narrow boats that once filled the canal networks of the Black Country and Birmingham, including what life was like ‘on the fly’ during the 54 hour journey from the Black Country to London!

You can also hear about some gruesome remedies in the chemist, sit in on an Edwardian school lesson and learn your ABCs backwards or descend on foot ‘into the thick’ of an underground drift mine and discover what life was like as a 19th century miner.

Explore 26 acres of period shops and houses where you’ll meet costumed characters – they’ll tell you what it was like to live and work at the height of the industrial revolution, before electricity, where steampower ruled.

And on Monday, you can also  enjoy the comedy of Punch & Judy and some light entertainment from our pub pianist in the Bottle & Glass.
