Bus Pull Challenge to Raise Money for Museum

31 July 2013

Black Country Living Museum is teaming up with local American Football Club Sandwell Steelers for a Black Country Challenge day at the Museum on August Bank Holiday Monday. The day will see teams from Sandwell Steelers compete against each other in a series of challenges, culminating in a vintage bus pull, to raise funds for both organisations.

The day resumes a relationship which started almost thirty years ago. In April 1986, Steelers players challenged themselves with a tram pull at the Museum, although the weight of the tram wasn’t the only test… blizzard conditions had to be contended with as well!

Today, both organisations have firmly established themselves within the local community: the Museum is not only a great day out for families but, as an educational charity, welcomes around 60,000 school children each year to learn of the Black Country’s impact on the world; Sandwell Steelers, based at Tipton Sports Academy, gives young people the opportunity to participate in a non-traditional sport and become physically active.

Steve Hannington, Chairman, Sandwell Steelers American Football Club, said: “Black Country Living Museum displays our local heritage and our club is very keen to be a part of the community.  This is where we are from and what we are about - hard working, persistent and inventive people. We look forward to hopefully recruiting new Sandwell Steelers players and fans of the future on the day, whilst raising vital funds for both deserving causes.”

Carolyn Sankey, Director of Development at the Museum, said: "The day aims to raise £2,000 for the organisations, to purchase game kits for the Sandwell Steelers new season and support the upkeep and restoration of vehicles in the Museum's Transport collection."
