A Hobbit’s Dream: UK’s ‘No. 1’ Hobbit Fan Wins Trip of a Lifetime

04 November 2014

After filming his YouTube competition video on location at Black Country Living Museum, local Stourbridge man’s dreams have become a reality after it was announced that he had won the trip of a lifetime to ‘Middle Earth’ to visit the set of the new Hobbit film and even meet Peter Jackson himself in his hometown of Wellington, New Zealand.

Kyle Pedley, 27, is one of seven winners of the official ‘Hobbit Fan Fellowship Contest’ launched by MGM which saw 140,000 people across 30 countries register to enter. Kyle was required to complete a series of tasks to enter, which included sending a postcard to Peter Jackson and filming a video on why he should be chosen. He used the Black Country Living Museum and Sarehole Mill as the film locations for his winning entry as an ‘unexpectedly tall’ hobbit (Kyle is a towering 6’7).

/media/news/library/141104_230_hobbit1.jpgAs a theatre and film critic Kyle has always been interested in filmography, and is now setting up a photography business of his own. He claims that the films are his ‘whole life’ and inspired him to study for a Film Production degree, for which he obtained a 1st Class with Honours.

“I own all of the Lord of the Ring and Hobbit films, most in as many as five different formats including the theatrical, extended and special editions, and know the scripts to each off by heart. In fact, people avoid watching them with me because I’m so prone to doing my own running commentary!”

It’s not just films that Kyle has to back up his fandom – the young filmmaker also owns tens of thousands of pounds worth of LOTR and Hobbit memorabilia. From maps and film cells to full replicas of costumes and weapons, Kyle has been building up a collection since he was a boy.

“My favourite piece would definitely be my exact replica of the One Ring itself as it was made by Jens Hansen, the goldsmiths who produced the actual rings for the movies. They sent me an exact replica free of charge from New Zealand after hearing about some of my fan videos and projects. Both emotionally and financially, it's completely priceless to me and I’ll most definitely be taking it along with me back to New Zealand where it was forged!”

Kyle will be jetting off for an all expenses paid trip. He’ll visit the Hobbit movie set and meet Mr Peter Jackson himself before settling down to watch a preview screening of the third and final film in The Hobbit Trilogy in with Jackson in his private studios in Wellington, New Zealand.

“It sounds like such a cliché, but this genuinely is an absolute dream come true! I am still in total shock and ever so slightly overwhelmed. A big thanks to the Black CountryLivingMuseum and Sarehole Mill for allowing me to recreate ‘Middle Earth’ and film my entry video there. To be going to New Zealand on Friday and representing the Midlands and the places that inspired Tolkien is an absolute thrill and honour.”
