Ironworker's Office

The Black Country was world famous for its production of iron and steel goods, including chain of all sizes, nails, tubes, forgings, rolled products and castings.

Visitors can discover more about the many ironworking processes of the area in the Castlefields Ironworks which occupies the corner of the village site down by the canal.

The chain shop which is operated every day has two hearths where small chain would be made and a larger one used to produce heavier chain that required two men to make it.

Next to the chain shop is the blacksmith's shop which made, amongst other things, tools for the rolling mill.

The mill is the large open-sided shed by the canal which has been set up as a typical Black Country re-rolling mill in which iron or steel bar could be reduced in size or changed in section.

The mill is demonstrated from time to time retaining the skills of Black Country craftsmen in manipulating iron.
