Brass Foundry

This working brass foundry and polishing workshop is from Shaw Street, Walsall and was originally built in 1869. Two men, known as Casters, would have operated the foundry or ‘tub casting shop’ reproducing brass items from lead patterns.

The patterns were used to create a mould in a box of sand. Brass was melted in the furnace below the floor in the centre of the shop and poured from the crucible into the boxes standing against the low shelf along the rear wall. When cooled the boxes are opened, the castings removed and taken for barrelling and polishing in the next room.
