Historic Lighting Weekend

29 September - 30 September 2018

Join us as we take you on a journey of light. Learn about how we moved from candlelight to electric lamps.

Bring the whole family to see a fun  and interactive mining show  that will show  the dangers faced by miners and some of the ways they would try to stay safe.   Learn more about the driving force behind the industrial revolution and learn why coal was such a valuable resource.   Our fully trained presenters will even set themselves on fire to demonstrate what qualified as health and safety in the Victorian era before creating a ‘fire tornado’ to talk about the revolutionary ‘Davy Lamp’.   With gasses and fire this show has everything you need for an explosive visit!

Join  us on Sunday  to take part in the candlestick challenge and have a go at making your very own dipped candles.

The Historic Lighting Club  of Great Britain will be displaying lamps and lighting from the last two centuries.  Lamps will include early primitive and simple Roman lamps to the elegant lamps of the rich and aristocracy of Victorian England. Also included are candle lamps, gas lamps, whale oil lamps, industrial lamps, mechanical lamps, paraffin lamps and early electric lamps.  The range of lamps will show the development and continuous improvements made as lamp makers sought to provide ever increasing light output based of materials and fuels as they were discovered.

There will also be a  programme of 10 minute taster demonstrations around our Museum
