We have a wide range of volunteering opportunites all year round, however at present we are especially looking for volunteers in the areas below: 

Visitor Engagement Volunteers

Do you have a passion for the Black Country?  Could you help to engage our visitors by sharing the stories of the buildings, history and lives lived there? 

With interactive demonstrations to deliver, visitor enquiries to deal with and high standards of presentation to maintain, your skills and enthusiasm will help to make our visitor’s day out really special.

Locksmith's House Volunteers

This role is based at our sister Museum, The Lockmith's House in Willenhall (not at BCLM).

We are looking for  a volunteer to help with  demonstrating activities to schools and general visitors at our sister Museum, The Locksmith's House in Willenhall.

This role would include carrying out the following day to day activities in an Edwardian costume: 

  • Demonstrating to small school groups (KS2 and below)
  • Interacting with visitors
  • Tidying and light cleaning as and when required
  • Helping to deliver our special event days

Sewing Room Volunteers

Our sewing room is open to all who have basic sewing skills and a passion for vintage clothing.

Here’s what might be involved in volunteering in the sewing room:

  • Utilising patterns and using sewing machines to make accurate vintage clothing, according to interests and skills
  • Basic sewing duties; sewing, cutting, hemming, etc.
  • Supporting our Learning and Curatorial teams projects
  • Getting involved in our events programme
  • Working independently or in a team

You can support our costumes provision with your sewing skills, whether you are experienced or have only learnt the basics. Have a few spare hours per week and an itch to develop your creativity skills?

Learning Support Volunteer

We are looking for volunteers to join our Learning Team.

The role will give you the opportunity to gain experience in project work, research and administrative duties and as a volunteer in this team you will be helping us to grow and diversify our visitor base.

What the role involves:

  • Computer based tasks, including online research & data entry
  • Assisting with the development & testing of new resources
  • Supporting the delivery of school sessions & activities for families during the holidays
  • Opportunities to get involved with specific Learning projects

Audience & Community Development Volunteer

We are looking for volunteers to join our Audience & Community Development Team.

The role will give you the opportunity to gain experience in project work, research and administrative duties and as a volunteer in this team you will be helping us to grow and diversify our visitor base.

What the role involves:

  • Typing up minutes from panel meetings
  • Web site implementation
  • Creating profiles & testimonials
  • Planning events for bespoke audiences

Gardening & Grounds Volunteer

We are looking for a volunteer to help with Gardening & grounds maintenance tasks – cutting back, pruning, raking, clearing beds, weeding, etc.

There will be a chance to grow vegetables in our cottage gardens and learn more about our period accurate planting schemes.

Hire & Hospitality Volunteer

We are looking for volunteers to join our Hire & Hospitality Team.

The role will give you the opportunity to gain experience in a customer facing & costumed role, providing assistance to our hire & hospitality team during daytime and evening corporate events.

Retail & Admissions Volunteer

We are looking for volunteers to support our Retail & Admissions team to deliver an exceptional visitor experience in our retail outlet and admissions desk.

In this role you will gain valuable experience in customer service and become part of and make a valuable contribution to the Museum's team.
