Help Make Our Learning Space Top of the Class

We need your support to help raise £2,000 towards the refurbishment of a much-needed learning space, creating new facilities and activities for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

Over 60,000 school children visit BCLM annually to take part in our award-winning learning programme where they discover our Black Country collections.  Our educational offer includes  a '1912 school experience' -  a role playing activity which  encourages children to compare themselves with an Edwardian counterpart and consider how different their lives might be. We want to improve our school experience to be more suitable for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

We will remove barriers to learning by creating a smaller classroom - a "safe place" perfectly suited to their learning needs, which still contains the features of a historic classroom.  The refurbishment will include upgrading heating and lighting, wider doors and wheelchair ramps, new blinds, repainting of walls, additional storage and traditional tiered seating which can be moved to create space.

We will introduce new hands-on  activities based on historic research, which will allow children to explore and enjoy our collections at their own pace. These activities will include; sand trays, building blocks, ink pens and  copy books  and magic lantern  shows.

We will also create an additional interpretation area for visitors who are unable to participate in the role play session, or are visual, linguistic and solitary learners and prefer to discover information for themselves. This will include; new audio-visual presentations, framed archival footage, interpretation panels, adapted wooden desks to display collection items and storage for traditional playground games and slate boards.

Your generous support is vital so that these children can enjoy immersive learning experiences and be inspired by Black Country history.
