Learn about the culture and craft traditions of the Black Country.

This course will demonstrate a range of different traditional canal crafts, including spider web embroidery, crochet, rag rugging and the making of twisted pearl necklaces. Participant can study one or all of the crafts demonstrated, and will get to take home the materials and tools that they have been using to continue their studies at home. 

The course is designed for the complete beginner or for those wishing to brush up on existing skills. You will gain the confidence and ability to tackle a variety of craft techniques and create your own simple designs.

About the course leader: Julie Tonkin

Julie is a professional narrow boat decorator, painting narrow boats and traditional items of canal ware for boats. Julie has been teaching roses and castles painting for many years and has a keen interest in canal culture and customs.


This is a Heritage Skills Daytime Course

Time: 10.00am - 4.00pm

Maximum Places: 12

Location: The Museum Conference Rooms               

Cost: £50 per person includes a certificate of completion, free parking, use of materials and tools necessary to the course, refreshment vouchers and lunch voucher.
